Taiwan's mountainous terrain with limited plains makes tunnel engineering play a crucial role in various infrastructure developments. Historically, professional terminology for domestic tunnel engineering primarily originated from foreign sources, often resulting in inconsistent translations or unclear semantics, which affected technical communication and knowledge transfer. To address this issue, the Chinese Taipei Tunnelling Association published the "Glossary of Tunnel Engineering Terminology" in 1999 to standardize domestic technical terminology. However, in recent years, with the increasing demand for underground space utilization, the government has successively promoted various tunnel construction projects for different purposes, including: mountain tunnels for railways and highways, metropolitan rapid transit tunnels, water diversion tunnels for hydraulic projects, reservoir sediment bypass and desilting tunnels, and underground power cable conduits. Different types of tunnel engineering projects employ varying construction methods, and various construction technologies and advanced construction techniques continue to be introduced domestically. The previously published "Glossary of Tunnel Engineering Terminology" has been in circulation for over twenty years, and the professional terms and vocabulary contained within are now insufficient. Therefore, the Sinotech Foundation for Research and Development of Engineering Sciences and Technologies and the Chinese Taipei Tunnelling Association jointly promoted the revision of the "Glossary of Tunnel Engineering Terminology" to facilitate technical communication, data storage, and knowledge transfer in domestic tunnel engineering.

This "Glossary of Tunnel Engineering Terminology, 2025 Edition" updates the Chinese Taipei Tunnelling Association's 1999 publication of the "Glossary of Tunnel Engineering Terminology." It compiles and organizes various engineering terms that have been newly added or modified domestically and internationally in recent years. The first draft was finalized after numerous meetings and multiple reviews by scholars and experts, ultimately taking over two years to complete. The compilation principles follow the original glossary format, focusing on the four major operational categories related to tunnel engineering: Investigation, Planning and Design, Construction, and Operation and Maintenance. The content is divided into nine major chapters: General, Ground Conditions, Planning and Design, Construction and Monitoring, Construction Equipment, Safety, Health and Environment, Operation and Maintenance, Contracts and Quality Control, and Others. We hope that the publication of this 2025 edition glossary will help the domestic tunnel engineering community establish a more comprehensive and common set of professional technical terms.
