♦ Taiwan-Japan Simulation Technology for Urban Flooding and
River Hydraulics Sediment Transport Technology Workshop

In the face of extreme weather changes brought about by climate change, water resource management and disaster prevention have become major issues of global concern. In particular, the research and application of simulation technology for urban flooding and river hydraulics sediment transport have become key focal points for many countries. In view of this, this workshop has specially invited experts and scholars from Japan, along with leading professionals from Taiwan's hydraulic engineering field. Through a variety of activities, including seminars, technical training, and field visits, the event aims to jointly explore the latest developments in simulation technology for urban flooding and river hydraulics sediment transport, and to deepen future cooperation and technical exchange between the two countries in this field.

On the first day of the event, following the opening remarks by Tseng Tsan-Pao, Chairman of the Sinotech Foundation for Research and Development of Engineering Science and Technologies, Yasuyuki Shimizu, Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Hokkai Gakuen University, shared insights on Japan’s next-generation hydraulic analysis and introduced the full capabilities of the iRIC version 4 latest solver. Following that, Chongkai Wang, a graduate student at National Cheng Kung University, Yijia Huang, a graduate student at National Chung Hsing University, and Liu Zhengqi, a graduate student at National Taiwan University, gave presentations on the application of the iRIC-Nays2DH, iRIC-Nays2D Flood, and SRH-2D modules. Then, a comprehensive discussion was held with lively interactive exchanges. In the afternoon, Takasho Abe, Chief Researcher at the National Research and Development Agency Public Works Research Institute and the Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region, conducted a training session on the iRIC-Nays2DH and iRIC-Nays2D Flood models. It enabled engineers and researchers from Taiwan to gain an in-depth understanding of the theoretical foundations, operational techniques, and practical applications of iRIC, thereby enhancing Taiwan’s application capabilities in river numerical simulation.

On the second day of the event, the Japanese experts visited the Yuanwangkeng River to observe the results of river and stream restoration efforts, as well as the conservation and development measures for watershed slopes in the Jiufen mountain area. They then proceeded to the Yuansantze Flood Diversion Management Center, where they attended a briefing and toured the flood diversion inlet. The Japanese experts highly praised the Yuansantze Flood Diversion for effectively mitigating flood threats in the Greater Taipei area. Through this exchange seminar, successful cooperation and exchanges were fostered between Taiwan and Japan in the fields of water resource management and disaster prevention. All participants gained a deeper understanding of the topic.
